The overall goal of the project is to describe and demonstrate how nanometer-sized metal structures affect fundamental photophysical processes of nearby molecules, viz. Raman scattering, one and two photon absorption, fluorescence and energy transfer. One aim of the project is to design and prepare well-defined assemblies of nanoparticles and molecules in which their chromophores are deliberately placed in “hot spots”. The properties of such assemblies and specifically their quenching or enhancing capacities will be controlled at the single particle level. The nanospectroscopy team at Lab. Aimé Cotton (CNRS, University Paris XI) has an expertise in the field of single molecules. Different methods are available, such as confocal microscopy, Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The role of the team is to combine such tools in order to recover the photonic properties of the synthesised assemblies.
